As part of the effort to help people fleeing Ukraine, various non-profit organisations, universities and local governments decided to open emergency funds and scholarship programs dedicated to this group. Many institutions reacted immediately, offering grants, accommodation, and other support. In this article you will find a list of scholarships offered by foreign institutions for people fleeing Ukraine. Award for Ukrainian Scientists in the fields of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology, bio-medicine

The Kosciuszko Foundation is pleased to announce a competition for scientists from Ukraine, who, as a result of the Russian invasion, found themselves in Poland, or who are still in Ukraine.

The purpose of the award is to honor scientific achievements and support outstanding scientists in the fields of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology, and biomedicine. The award may be given to scientists with Ukrainian citizenship and at least a doctorate (PhD). In order to be eligible for the award, one must be an employee or research associate of a higher education institution or other scientific research unit and submit the required documents.

The prize amount is 30 000 USD. The committee of experts may decide to divide the sum, with each individual prize being a minimum of 5000 USD.

Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation announces the second edition of scholarships for journalists and war correspondents in Ukraine.

Chevening scholarships for Master’s degree programmes in the United Kingdom

Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarships programme. Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations, we offer awards to study in the UK for one year on a fully funded master’s degree course.

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory (including Ukraine).
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application.
  • Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 14 July 2022.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.

There are many benefits to being selected, including fully funded tuition fees, access to some of the best quality education in the world, exclusive networking opportunities, and the chance to explore the UK’s diverse culture.

Visegrad Scholarship at the Open Society Archives

The twenty grants of 2.700 euro each are designed to provide access to the archives for scholars, artists, and journalists, and to cover travel to and from Budapest, a modest subsistence, and accommodation for a research period of eight weeks. Stipends for shorter periods are pro-rated. The theme of this year’s edition is Lessons from the Cold War.

Applicants, preferably but not exclusively, from a V4 country, may be researchers, students after their second degree carrying out research, or artists, journalists, academics, or both.

Scholars at risk from war zones as well as refugees of conscience (scholars fleeing authoritarian regimes) are especially invited to apply.

Submission deadlines for the 2022/23 academic year:

  • July 25, 2022.
  • November 15, 2022.

Deutsches Museum Scholarships

Deutsches Museum is now offering short-term scholarships (max. 6 month) for Ukrainian scholars in Munich. Please follow the application modalities. Letters of reference are not required. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Scholarship holders will have their own workplace with a desktop computer and telephone, and the opportunity to reside temporarily in subsidized apartments of the museum complex insofar as these are available. They will present their research projects to colleagues at the beginning of their stay and will be expected to participate regularly in the museum’s and the Munich Centre’s Monday colloquium series and workshops.

Scholars at any level of seniority are eligible to apply, provided they have at least one university degree (Master or PhD). BA is not sufficient.

Flying University Courses for Ukrainian Students

Flying University Courses for Ukrainian Students (FUUS) will assist students whose lives have been disrupted by the war. FUUS is supported by the Kosciuszko Foundation (New York and Warsaw).

The Kosciuszko Foundation is organizing academic courses for Ukrainian students in humanities and social sciences. The new project “Flying University Courses for Ukrainian Students (FUUS)” is implemented under the “Freedom starts with your mind” program.

The aim of the project is to support Ukrainian students who are hindered or prevented from studying by the war in Ukraine. Online courses in English will be conducted pro bono by distinguished lecturers from the best American colleges and university departments. Through participation in the courses, undergraduate and graduate students can:

  • deepen their knowledge on current and academically relevant topics;
  • develop their skills, learn about other cultures and establish interesting relationships;
  • increase their competence in the use of academic English.

The first round of courses will take place in June 2022. These will be online courses taught in English to undergraduate and graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. Active working methods will be implemented in groups of up to 12 students. Students will be required to engage in class activities, analyze readings, write a short essay, and participate in discussions. If the student meets the course requirements he/she will receive a certificate of participation.

“Freedom starts with your mind” grant program for academics from Ukraine

The Kosciuszko Foundation is starting a new grant program for academics from Ukraine who due to Russian invasion are located in Poland and thus are unable to continue their academic work in Ukraine.

The program’s aim is to provide individuals who can’t return to their homeland and therefore continue their academic work with support. The grants will facilitate the resumption of their work through a research project carried out in Poland.

The addressees of the program are scientists from Ukraine who have both Ukrainian citizenship and at least a PhD degree. To obtain the grant one must meet a condition of being an employee or a co-researcher of either a Ukrainian university or other research unit and provide the necessary documents. The research project described in an application must be carried out in cooperation with either a Polish university or research institution.

A one-time grant of 10 000 PLN will be awarded based on an application to the program in a form, which includes:

  • individual’s CV attached
  • candidate’s academic work description
  • description of research project that is to be realized in Poland
  • a scan of a letter or e-mail from research supervisor or co-worker from Polish university or research unit that confirms the willingness of cooperation in the project.

Applications must be filled out in Polish or English.

The Kosciuszko Foundation accepts candidates’ applications continuously.

Václav Havel Journalism Fellowship in Prague

The Fellowship is a seven-month program. Fellows will spend six months at RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty’s headquarters in Prague, where they will be placed with an appropriate language service to receive daily, on-the-job training and mentoring while working alongside RFE/RL’s seasoned professionals. After Prague, Fellows will return to the bureau (if applicable) for a final month.

A monthly stipend at the bureau and in Prague, housing, health insurance, and travel arrangements to and from Prague shall be provided.

The Fellowship accepts applications from journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation. Eligible applicants will have a minimum of two years’ experience working as a journalist in their native language; be committed to working as a journalist in, or for audiences in, their home country; share RFE/RL’s mission; and be proficient in English.

Scholarships for Ukrainian refugees at the University of Oxford

The Graduate Scholarship Scheme for Ukraine Refugees offers full financial support to pursue graduate study at Oxford for those who have been displaced within or outside Ukraine.

Up to 20 scholarships are available for applicants who are ordinarily resident in Ukraine and who have been displaced within or outside Ukraine. These scholarships are open to those meeting the eligibility criteria and who will have been selected for a place on an eligible full-time one-year master’s degree at the University of Oxford to start in September or October 2022.

Each scholarship will cover course fees in full and will provide the students with £7,500 to cover their living expenses for the duration of their course. Free accommodation and meals, when the college kitchens are open, will be provided by the participating colleges.

The deadline for applications to the Graduate Scholarship Scheme for Ukraine Refugees will be 12:00 midday UK time on Monday 20 June 2022.

Journalist-in-Residence Programme in Kosovo

The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) has opened the call for applications from Ukraine for the Journalists-in-Residence Kosovo (JiR Kosovo) Programme.

The JiR Kosovo Programme is financed by the Government of Republic of Kosovo and enables 20 individual Ukrainian journalists and media workers to relocate to Kosovo for a period of up to six months with the possibility of extension depending on the developments in Ukraine. Journalists arriving in Kosovo will have the status of internationally protected individuals.

To be eligible, journalists and media workers must have lived in Ukraine in 2022, hold a valid Ukrainian passport, have been working as professional journalists for at least three years, and speak at least basic English.

Successful candidates are provided with 1,000 euro for relocation, a monthly stipend of 500 euro, and 300 euro for rent. They will have access to an office space, to health insurance, and to language and integration courses. Upon request, the candidates will have access to psychological support.

Європейський центр свободи преси та засобів масової інформації (The European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, ECPMF) відкриває прийом заявок з України за Програмою “Проживання журналістів у Косово” (Journalists-in-Residence Kosovo, JiR Kosovo).

Програма фінансується урядом Республіки Косово і надає можливість 20-ти українським журналістам та працівникам ЗМІ переїхати до Косово на період до шести місяців з можливістю продовження, залежно від подій в Україні. Журналісти, які приїдуть до Косово, отримають статус захисту осіб за міжнародним законодавством.

Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Tampere

Tampere University now calls for applications for five (5) two-year, fixed-term and full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow positions. This call is targeted for Ukrainian post-docs who cannot continue their work in Ukraine due to the war and are seeking for a temporary position outside Ukraine. The positions are based in Tampere.

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies’ Fellowships for Ukrainian professionals

The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS) is an international, inter-, and transdisciplinary research institute located in Potsdam, Germany, funded by the German Federal Government and the State of Brandenburg. The main purpose of the institute is to integrate different types of knowledge needed to support transformations towards sustainability. The institute conducts research across a range of topics, including air quality and climate change, energy transitions, governance for sustainable development and more.

A key feature of the IASS is its Fellow Programme: Each year, about 30 individuals from around the world participate in the Fellow Programme. During their stay, the fellows work with each other and IASS’ researchers, providing expertise, inspiration, and creative input. In return, the IASS offers fellows the opportunity to develop their ideas in an international community of eminent researchers, within the institute, and also in the wider Potsdam-Berlin area.

To support scientists and other experts in the field of sustainability who have been forced to flee following the invasion of Ukraine, the IASS is issuing a special call for IASS Fellows. These fellowships are open to individuals at all career stages and from a wide range of sectors, including science, public administration, the private sector, civil society, media, and the arts.

These fellowships will initially be limited through to 31 December 2022. The financial compensation will be via a tax-free stipend. The actual amount will vary depending on the applicant’s relevant work experience and will range from €1,650 to €4,400 per month. Limited financial support for travel expenses and the cost of moving to Potsdam will also be available.

While the total number of Fellows that IASS can accept is limited, the Institute will continue to accept applications as long as resources are available. Applications will be reviewed as soon as they are received.

Slovak Academy of Sciences’ support for Ukrainian researchers and doctoral students

The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) sensitively perceives the events happening in Ukraine and offers a helping hand to Ukrainian researchers and doctoral students.

  • SAS will continue to create suitable working and study conditions not only for those currently working at its premises but also for new researchers and doctoral students coming from Ukraine.
  • SAS will offer free accommodation capacities in Bratislava, Smolenice and Stará Lesná for newly arriving Ukrainian colleagues, as well as for their family members. It will also provide free accommodation capacities for family members of current employees and doctoral students.
  • The Academy will provide financial support to doctoral students and young researchers who will be able to continue their studies and research in Slovakia.
  • The Academy wants to allow Ukrainian doctoral students who complete their studies at the SAS to remain working in their field at the SAS.
  • The Academy will provide a significant reduction of fees for accommodation for Ukrainian employees and doctoral students of the SAS currently accommodated in its facilities.

Student support offered by Vytautas Magnus University

Vytautas Magnus University is lending a helping hand to Ukrainians. In 2020, a support fund was established at VMU for the students who suffered from state repression in Belarus. From now on, this fund will also support the students who have suffered from military operations in Ukraine.

For current students university may:

  • Provide scholarships (students must have a bank account in Lithuania or EU)
  • Accommodate at the university’s dormitory
  • Offer tuition fee deduction or exemption
  • Provide deduction or exemption from accommodation fee at VMU dormitory
  • Help find work in Lithuania
  • Provide psychological support
  • Provide other support

University of Tübingen emergency fund

The University of Tübingen has set up an emergency fund with research fellowships to support Ukrainian researchers at risk. The fellowships are awarded for a period of up to 12 months.

Target group: Researchers (postdoc and beyond) from Ukraine; all fields of research. In exceptional cases, PhD candidates can also apply for a bridging fellowship.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich scholarship for historians

The Department of History at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, together with the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission (DUHK), the Project House Europe and the Center for Global History, has launched a program that enables Ukrainian scholars in the historical sciences to spend up to six months at LMU.

Applications are informal and require only a CV, a brief description of the project and of the personal situation. The fellowship will provide funding to support researchers and their families in Munich.

PAUSE scholarships for researchers

PAUSE program opens a special call for emergency assistance to Ukrainian researchers in danger, through an emergency fund granted by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

An emergency financial aid to finance the stay of a Ukrainian researcher, and his/her family if applicable, for a period of three months is proposed to voluntary French institutions. The amount of the financial aid will be a lump sum based on the number of people in the family unit (single person, couple, family).

This emergency hosting in France may allow the researcher to prepare, in connection with a host institution, an application to the PAUSE program according to the regular procedures and criteria of the program, based on co- funding.

A simplified application form must be completed online by the host institution.

Програма ПАУЗА (PAUSE) відкриває спеціальний проект для надання невідкладної допомоги українським дослідникам, які знаходяться в групі ризику, завдяки екстренному фонду, наданому французьким Міністерством вищої освіти, досліджень та інновацій.

Приймаючим закладам, які хочуть брати участь у цьому проекті, надається невідкладна матеріальна допомога для фінансування перебування українського дослідника/дослідниці та його/її сім’ї у разі потреби на три місяці. Відповідна сума буде визначена та індексована відповідно до кількості прийнятих осіб (одна людина, пара, сім’я).

Це екстренне розміщення у Франції може дозволити досліднику підготувати разом з приймаючою установою заявку на програму PAUSE відповідно до звичайних процедур і класичних критеріїв програми, на основі спільного фінансування.

Приймаюча установа має заповнити спрощену форму заявки в Інтернеті.

PAUSE scholarships for artists and cultural professionals

The French hosting program for scientists and artists in exile (PAUSE program) opens a special emergency fund for artists and cultural professionals affected by the war in Ukraine thanks to the support of the French Ministry of Culture.

An emergency aid allowing to finance the stay of an artist or cultural professional, and his/her family if necessary, for a period of three months is proposed to voluntary French cultural institutions. The corresponding amount will be a flat rate and indexed to the number of people in the family unit hosted (single person, couple, family).

The purpose of this emergency aid in France is to allow the artist to have the time to prepare an application to the PAUSE program, in collaboration with a host institution, according to the regular procedures and criteria of the program, based on co-funding.

Cultural professionals are not eligible to PAUSE’s calls for applications (regular procedures). Their host institutions will not be able to apply to PAUSE program after this 3-month emergency fund. It will be up to them to accompany the beneficiaries to other professional opportunities.

Since 2013 AR has been collaborating with arts non-profits and government funders to assist artists who are at risk politically and fleeing oppression and war in 26 locations in 19 countries globally.

German Research Foundation support for researchers

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) supports researchers who have fled their home countries by making it easier for them to join research projects and apply for funding under the Walter Benjamin Programme.

Refugee researchers can submit a proposal for their own project to be carried out in Germany under the Walter Benjamin Programme (Walter Benjamin post). The restriction of the target group to the early postdoc phase that otherwise exists under this programme does not apply to refugees.
